Coachella started strong this year, with a Friday featuring numerous much-anticipated performances — including festival debut sets by breakout artists, festival return sets by longtime favorites, and a headlining debut set by an artist who predicted her eventual top-of-the-bill status during her most recent Coachella performance two years prior.
It was a very hot and sunny day in the desert, with both the Coachella powers that be and numerous artists on stage repeatedly reminding attendees to stay hydrated. However, by night, things had cooled and gotten particularly windy, which led to perhaps the day’s lone major disappointment — the last-minute canceling of Anyma Presents: ÆDEN, the much-hyped midnight dance set supposed to see day one out, which reportedly had the plug pulled on it due to the windy conditions.
Still, the day was a packed one — even Anyma fans still had the choice of going to see either Gordo, alt-R&B fixture Blood Orange or rap hitmaker Sexyy Red at midnight instead of the dance duo, which would be very strong backup options for just about any kind of music fan. And there were still great dance moments earlier in the day, as well as plenty of memorable on-stage happenings from the worlds of rock and pop, which appear to be the two genres most firmly at the festival’s core as of 2026.
Here are 10 of our staffers’ picks for the most memorable moments from the first day of Coachella 2026, officially the festival’s 25th edition, with plenty more such moments no doubt to follow on Saturday and Sunday.
Ever since she topped the Billboard Hot 100 with her debut track “Just Dance” in 2008, Lady Gaga has cemented herself as one of the greatest pop stars of the 21st century.
The success of “Just Dance” was not at all a fluke, it was actually an indicator of what was to come. Her follow-up track “Poker Face” also hit No. 1 on the Hot 100. Her debut album The Fame debuted at 17 on the Billboard 200 and rose to No. 2 on the chart after release of The Fame Monster. In the years after “Just Dance,” Gaga would continue to release some of the defining pop tracks of the century with songs like “Born This Way” and “Bad Romance.”
Lady Gaga has also made waves outside of pop music. Since her debut, she has released not one but two Grammy-winning jazz duet albums with legend Tony Bennett. In 2012, she started the Born This Way Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on tackling issues of youth mental health and bullying. In 2018, she wrote music for and starred in Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born remake, earning her first Oscar nominations and a win for best original song. The following year, Gaga launched her makeup company Haus Labs, which has gone on to win several beauty awards for their innovative products.
Now, nearly two decades into her illustrious career, Gaga continues to ascend. In 2025, she released her seventh solo studio album MAYHEM, which topped the Billboard 200 and spawned six Hot 100 hits, including the No. 1 Bruno Mars duet “Die With a Smile.” The single spent five weeks at No. 1 and 60 weeks on the chart, and also made history as the first ever year-end Hot 100 No. 1 duet by a female and male soloist each in lead roles in the chart’s history. On top of the charts success, MAYHEM also brought Gaga her 15th and 16th Grammys with wins for best dance pop recording (for “Abracadabra”) and best pop vocal album at the 2026 awards.

Fresh off the success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo just dropped a limited-time bundle celebrating all things Mario.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie pulls direct inspo from Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy game down to the title and character. The film features beloved plumber Mario, voiced by Chris Pratt, and his mustachioed brother Luigi, voiced by Charlie Day, along with the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy.
New characters only seen in the game are also featured in the new iteration, including Princess Rosalina, played by Brie Larson and Bowser Jr. by Benny Safdie. The film had major wins in the box office with “$182.4M overseas, while U.S. and Canada rang up $190M over the Easter weekend stretch,” according to Deadline.
Super Mario Galaxy was released in 2007, while the sequel was dropped in 2010. The first game is hallowed for its atmosphere, story and charm, while the second game is favored for its gameplay and unique level design. Both games are extremely addictive in their own right.
